Two losses for Nelson boys

Nelson have yet to score a goal after two heavy defeats at the national under-15 premier boys’ hockey tournament at Nelson’s Saxton Turf.

Following Monday’s 5-0 loss to Northland in pool B, Nelson suffered a decisive 10-0 loss to Waikato yesterday.

Waikato beat Tauranga 3-2 in Monday’s other pool B clash while in pool A, Canterbury easily beat Counties Manukau 8-0 while Otago and Southland drew 2-2 in their southern derby.

In Monday’s biggest result, Lucca Burley scored seven goals in Hawke’s Bay’s stunning 17-0 win over Taranaki in pool D. Hawke’s Bay had led 11-0 at halftime, Burley scoring four goals, as Theo Jervis, Logan Gee and captain Marcus Ambrose each finished the match with two goals.

Bay of Plenty beat Wellington 4-1 in the other pool D clash.

In pool C, North Harbour beat Manawatu 7-0 and Auckland beat Wairarapa 4-1.

In yesterday’s other early clash, Auckland beat Manawatu 4-0.

Meanwhile, Nelson lost 5-1 to Hawke’s Bay in their opening match of the national under-15 premier girls’ tournament at North Harbour.

Hawke’s Bay had the bulk of the possession in the first half and led 4-0 at the break. But Nelson’s defence improved in the second half, restrictin­g Hawke’s Bay to one further goal, while Sophia Kersten converted a stroke to score Nelson’s only goal.
