Weekend labour of love

- GOLF CROQUET

Mikey Lauer and Ellie Ross won the doubles while Yvonne Fuller and Ian Gillespie took out the singles crowns at the Croquet Nelson annual Labour Weekend golf croquet tournament.

Held at the Nelson Hinemoa club, the tournament attracted 15 teams for Saturday’s doubles competition held in markedly better conditions to those that washed out the recent South Island Masters event.

Played in two blocks, Lauer and Ross took top spot in block A with six wins from seven games, with runners up Dave and Jenny Close scoring five wins.

Lynette Gulliver and Nita Borcovsky won block B with five out of six wins. Although Sue Bowater and Jock Mitchell matched them for wins, Gulliver and Borcovsky progressed to the final by virtue of scoring more net hoops with Nelson Hinemoa’s promising youth members Lauer and Ross winning the final 7-2..

Sunday’s Junior Singles Trophy competition, for players with handicaps of six and over, was contested as a round robin by nine players, resulting in a welldeserved success for Yvonne Fuller with seven wins. Tom Keenan was second with six wins.

The Senior Singles, for handicaps of five and below, was contested by seven players, and resulted in a tie between Ellie Ross and Ian Gillespie, with five wins each. Gillespie secured the title with plus-17 net hoops.
