Sheat in winning form on the track

Lucy Sheat is ready for this weekend’s New Zealand secondary schools’ athletics championsh­ips.

She proved that by dominating the sprints at last Friday’s Athletics Nelson Twilight Series meet at the Saxton Field athletics track.

Sheat, who will contest the 100m and 200m in Hastings, edged training mate Amanda Fitisemanu in winning the 60m in 7.78sec and the 100m in 12.12sec. Fitisemanu returned to win a close race over runner-up Izzy Neal in the 200m in 25.54sec.

Kalani Sheridan outsprinte­d Angus Wemyss in the home stretch to win the men’s 1500m in a personal best 4min 5.25sec. Nick Matthews and Fletcher Pickworth also broke 4min10sec. Lucy Harman ran a personal best 5min 5.77sec to win the womens 1500m.

Jacob Bryan improved four seconds on his season best 800m with his time of 2min 4.01sec. His sister, Emily, won the javelin with 33.55m. Bryn Stevens won the men’s 400m in 57.88sec, and Jacob Brooks the 200m in 24.97sec.

Twenty-four runners showed up for the masters mile, which was won by Brian Kemp in 5min 15.92sec. Sally-Anne Jones was the first women’s finisher in 7min45.01sec.

Kim Lammers won the women’s long jump with 4.75m and Shannen Smith took out the women’s triple jump with 10.55m. Adam Stack, who won the 60m and was second to Oscar Field in the 100m, won the men’s long jump with 5.39m. Jamey Ingham held off Henry Russon to win the triple jump with 10.73m.

The next Twilight Series meet will be held on December 13.
