Tree moves up but spirit unchanged

- CARLY GOOCH

The Nelson Mail office may have moved upstairs but its charitable Christmas tree spirit remains firm.

The tree is up again just a little higher than usual, on the second floor of the Nelson Mail building and is set up to receive gifts to pass on to the Salvation Army.

Nelson regional editor Victoria Guild said the Christmas collection was a proud Nelson Mail tradition.

‘‘We’ve had a tree here every year that I can remember, and the generosity of the public is always heartwarming,’’ she said.

Guild said some people might not have realised the collection was still happening this year because of the renovations in the Nelson Mail building.

‘‘Our reception has relocated to the first floor of the building while construction of our new office takes place,’’ she said.

‘‘We have several presents under the tree already but it would be great to have a huge pile to pass on.

‘‘We know Nelsonians are incredibly generous and we’d love for everyone to have some Christmas cheer.’’

Unwrapped gifts including sporting goods, books and clothing can be placed at the base of the tree until December 15.

People can enter the Nelson Mail building in Bridge St through the double doors to the left of the former entrance and either head up the stairs or use the lift.
