Windies swept away

-

New Zealand romped to a 2-0 test series triumph over a woeful West Indies outfit in Hamilton yesterday.

The Black Caps wrapped up the second test with a win by 240 runs at Seddon Park as the tourists capitulated for 203 in their second innings, chasing a most unlikely 444 for victory.

During the morning session, Trent Boult became the sixth New Zealand bowler to take 200 test wickets.

The Windies resumed their second innings at 30-2 with two days up their sleeves to try and register a test record fourth innings chase.

Any suspension over the likely result mostly disappeared by lunch when the visitors slumped to 106-5, with batsman Sunil Ambris retiring hurt arm after being struck on the left forearm by a rising ball from Neil Wagner.

Ambris was later confirmed with a fractured ulna after a trip to Waikato Hospital, ruling him out of the one-day matches to follow.

Roston Chase and Raymon Riefer did their best to delay the inevitable by adding a partnership of 78 before Chase became another tourist to fall for the wiles of Wagner, hooking to end his 98-ball stay on 64.

Allrounder Riefer completed an encouraging test debut on the losing side by making 29 while occupying the crease for 109 deliveries but it was never going to be enough to even take the test into a final day as Mitchell Santner ended the encounter by taking two wickets in as many balls.

Wagner took 3-42 in the Windies’ second dig to give him 14 wickets in the series.

New Zealand won the first test in Wellington by an innings an 67 runs.
