Colvey’s Rapids rise

- LIAM HYSLOP

Kip Colvey will become the first All White to join his former coach Anthony Hudson at the Colorado Rapids.

The 23-year-old defender was picked up by Hudson with the third overall pick of the 2017 Major League Soccer waiver draft yesterday.

The draft featured all the players who were released by MLS clubs, but had not been in the league long enough to be eligible for free agency or what is called the re-entry draft.

Colvey’s last club, the San Jose Earthquakes, let him go, and Hudson used his pick to secure a player he has long held a high opinion of. Colvey made his All Whites debut under Hudson in 2016 and has gained 15 caps since. He signed with the Earthquakes in March 2016, making the first of four MLS appearances shortly after. But it wasn’t long before he he fell out of favour and spent the 2017 campaign on loan at United Soccer League side Reno 1868 FC.

When he joins the Rapids, he will be on the club’s supplemental roster. That roster is used for spots 21-24, which do not count against the club’s salary budget. The minimum salary for those players is $92,500.

Colvey was one of only two players selected from the 57 available in the waiver draft. The other was former LA Galaxy goalkeeper Clement Diop, who was selected by the Montreal Impact.

Colvey holds dual US and New Zealand citizenship after being born in Hawaii, but raised in the Marlborough Sounds.

It was the second bit of good news for young All Whites on Thursday, with 20-year-old striker Myer Bevan signing a first-team contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS.
