How to save 17pc on your shopping

- SUSAN EDMUNDS

Bad news for Christmas shoppers – Boxing Day is set to offer the lowest prices this month.

New data from price comparison website PriceSpy shows that although prices could be expected to start to drop from today, they would bottom out on Boxing Day.

Country manager Liisa MatinvesiBassett expected 40 per cent of the products on the site to be discounted next Tuesday.

‘‘Those that wait to do their shopping just one day after Christmas Day can expect to receive an average saving of around 17 per cent per product,’’ she said.

Almost a third of items listed on PriceSpy on Boxing Day 2016 were at a lower price than a week earlier.

‘‘Our data clearly demonstrates the closer you get towards Christmas, the bigger the savings consumers can potentially receive.

‘‘This is especially so for the more popular items like speakers, headphones, activity trackers, perfumes and toys.’’

She said the site had seen a clear spike in the number of people looking for fans. But the most popular fan on the market, a Dyson blade-free model, was at its highest price over summer, peaking at $486.

During winter that same product had sold for $365.

‘‘Kiwis are also hunting out barbecues at this time of year as according to our data, the popularity of barbecues in New Zealand can increase five-fold during the summer months. If this heatwave is anything to go by, this year it may be even higher.’’

Jonathan Elms, Massey University’s Sir Stephen Tindall chair in retail management, said a 17 per cent saving was in line with what he would expect of Boxing Day.

‘‘Some things are likely to be significantly discounted, others not so much – largely depending on the seasonality of the product and/or the extent the retail wants to get rid of old stock, given the arrival of new stock – and, of course, how successful the lead-up to Christmas will be for the retailer.’’
