Men grab puppy in driveway attack

- LAINE MOGER

A woman is traumatised after two men stole her 9-week-old rottweiler puppy from her arms outside her home on Auckland’s North Shore.

Grace Read says she was in her Castor Bay driveway late on Monday morning when the pair shoved her to the ground and took her puppy, Rosko.

‘‘I was just outside letting him [Rosko] walk around and two guys came down the driveway. First, I thought maybe it was the neighbour’s visitors,’’ Read said.

Next, the two men, knocked on Read’s door and called out to her in the driveway, asking who she was. ‘‘They tried to get inside. I said, I’m not letting you just waltz into my house!’’

When Read asked the pair to leave, she said one of the men got really aggressive and ‘‘flung’’ her into the ground.

On the ground, Read saw the other man go for Rosko.

‘‘I managed to pull my puppy into my arms, but the guy said ‘get the dog, get the dog’.’’

Leaving bruises on Read’s arms, the man wrangled the puppy from her arms and threw the dog to his accomplice.

Read said she began screaming for her partner, but the men had already taken off. They tried to chase them, but had no luck, she said.

‘‘It all happened so quickly – all within a minute,’’ Read said.

In her concern to look after Rosko, she was only able to get a vague description.

Rosko is a rottweiler puppy, black with a brown chest and brown eyebrows.

‘‘It’s been absolute hell. I’ve only had him a week-and-a-half. I was so in love with him,’’ she said. ‘‘I just want him to be safe.’’ Rosko was so loved, he even had his own Instagram account.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marcia Murray said police attended an incident where a woman was assaulted in Castor Bay shortly before noon on Monday and a puppy was taken by two males.

Police were investigating the matter and were following lines of inquiry.
