Suburban Club to auction chattels

- TIM O'CONNELL

Nelson Suburban Club is auctioning off its chattels as efforts continue to keep the heart and soul of the club alive.

Faced with a falling membership and a financial squeeze the club announced in early December that it would stop operating out of Tahunanui Drive at the end of 2017.

At the time, president Pamela Coltman said it was not known how, or if, the club would continue.

On January 17 the club posted on Facebook that it was looking at using the Nelson Golf Club premises for future activities for its members and was negotiating with the club board.

As of last week, some club activities such as housie had taken place at the Golf Club on Bolt Rd.

A final clearance auction of the club’s chattels, co-ordinated by local firm JW Auctions on behalf of the club, will take place at the Suburban Club tomorrow from 11am.

A viewing of the items is scheduled for today between 11am and 4pm.

Among the goods on offer are more than 200 chairs and tables, full-sized billiards tables and cooking or hospitality equipment.

‘‘The billiard table is absolutely beautiful,’’ auctioneer John Walker said

‘‘I’d say it’d go for around $1000 but would be worth five times that – but everything has to go.’’

Club manager Chrissy Taylor would not say if an agreement had been made with the golf club but acknowledged the process of moving was tough for all involved.

‘‘We’re probably going to come out with nothing, so it could be difficult [going forward].

‘‘At the moment it’s a bit upsetting going through all of this – we’re still in negotiations but at the moment we don’t have anything to offer people,’’ Taylor said.

Next week the Nelson Suburban Club will hand over its old premises to landlords Gibbons Holdings Limited.
