Their Finest, 8.30pm, Saturday, Rialto
Based on Lissa Evans’ 2009 novel Their Finest Hour and a Half, Danish director Lone Scherfig ( An Education) proves a master of creating a sense of space and place in this 2017 drama. Here, wartime Britain is lovingly brought to life in all its stiff upper lip and dangerevery-night glory. This film skilfully juxtaposes broad humour with bleak drama, as our ‘‘heroes’’ attempt to use their typewriters and acting skills to lift a nation. Filled with memorable moments and one-liners, as well as more than a couple of surprising twists and turns, Their Finest lives up to its name, thanks largely to a fabulous cast, including Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy and Sam Claflin, and a director at the top of her game.
Liar, 8.45pm, Sunday, TVNZ1
Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd star in this six-part thriller about a teacher and a surgeon whose first date has farreaching consequences. ‘‘Slick, layered and, in being centred on two people’s wildly different recollections of sexual intercourse, did a deft job in keeping us stumped,’’ wrote The Times’ Carol Midgley.
