Kaffe Fassett bringing colour to our patch

- SARA MEIJ

Colourful American artist and patchworker extraordinaire Kaffe Fassett is coming to Mapua for a workshop.

Cushla’s Village Fabrics will be hosting the colour design event at the Mapua Hills Community Church on January 31.

It includes choosing and cutting fabric and attendees will make their own compilation on a design wall.

Shop owner Cushla Stevenson said Fassett would visit with fellow designer Brandon Mably from the United Kingdom, as part of their tour of New Zealand and Australia.

‘‘It’s very exciting that this calibre of internationally recognised arts designer is coming to this region.’’

There’s only limited space for the workshop, with many of the 30 spaces already booked out.

Fassett, 80, has published many ‘‘how to’’ books in colour design, patchwork, knitting and painting in the last 50 years.

He has said his motto is ‘‘when in doubt, add 20 more colours’’.

Fassett was born in San Francisco in 1937 and he studied at the Bostom Museum of Fine Arts School before moving to England in 1964.

His passion for colour led him to knitting and designing knitwear for fashion brands Missoni and Bill Gibb and his hand-knitted garments are on display in museum collections around the world.

In 1988 he became the first living textile artist to have an oneman show at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Kaffe’s garments have been commissioned and collected by Barbra Streisand, Lauren Bacall, John Schlesinger, Ali McGraw and princess Michael of Kent.
