Time and tide
Viewing photos of motorists driving through flood water from the recent king tide, took me back to early 1957 when Trafalgar St, Elliot St. and many other streets in Nelson and other areas were flooded, including my newly acquired property.
Back in 1957 councillors were not paid for their services and rates were very low.
Nelson was often referred to as ‘‘Sleepy Hollow’. Since then contractors have acquired better machinery, Stoke became part of Nelson, Nelson has had approximately 10 mayors, 20 councils and many different councillors.
Millions of dollars have been collected in rates, some of which has been spent on stormwater pipelines and yet 61 years on we still have flooding.
Maybe it is time for the council to update their maintenance system, and possibly change some of their staff.
My old car which I thought would outlast me, was flooded and written off.
My garage, car-port and workshop were flooded and my yard was left with driftwood and bark from next-door property, which also had flood-damage.
Since the heavy rain on Sunday my replacement car has been parked on another property.
