Ko quits Twitter

- GOLF

Lydia Ko has revealed the real reason why she closed down her Twitter account and it wasn’t to escape the trolls.

Ko, who is playing in the Australian Open this week, has told media she has quit Twitter because it was taking up too much space on her phone.

The 20-year-old Kiwi this week changed her coach and caddie as she attempted to rediscover the form that took her to No 1 in the world.

It has been speculated that the reason why she quit the social media platform was to get away from any criticism about another shake up in her support team.

However, Ko said the reason why she quit Twitter was nothing to do with that. ‘‘I actually did it because I wasn’t really on Twitter that much,’’ Ko said. ‘‘I actually spend most of my social media time on Instagram. That was kind of the reason why, it was taking up storage on my phone, too. There’s no point me having it when I wasn’t interacting with fans there.’’

Given that Ko has earned $11.5 million over her career, it could be assumed she could afford a top of the range phone. An iPhone X with 256GB of memory costs $2099. Even though Ko didn’t have a great year in 2017, she could still have bought 561 of these phones.
