Greats honoured

-

Two Australian surfing greats who mastered the same break decades apart have been honoured for their contribution to the sport’s history and culture. Seven-time world champion Layne Beachley has been selected as the winner of the inaugural Midget Farrelly Lifetime Achievement Award. Farrelly, who died last year aged 71, claimed surfing’s inaugural world championship at Manly in 1964 before the surfboard shop owner pioneered Australia’s enduring dominance in the sport. Like Farrelly, Beachley cut her teeth in the water off Manly. The 45-yearold has been just as active on land too, mentoring women and helping charitable causes such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Planet Ark.
