Homeless keeping it clean

- TIM O’CONNELL

Originally from Wellington, ‘‘Maka’’ has lived around the Queen Elizabeth II carpark for about two years.

‘‘I’m here until I get some work ... but it’s not easy.’’

Most nights, he gets a good night’s sleep.

Occasionally, a bed is available with friends.

Despite his living conditions, Maka said he managed to make the best of the situation. ‘‘It’s alright – I keep it tidy. ‘‘You get some people who come off the streets and make a heck of a mess – mainly drunk people – the backpackers are alright, though,’’ he said.

‘‘As long as they’re tidy and know where the toilets are.’’

These days, just two men live in the concealed bush area.

Weka are the mens’ most regular visitors while high tide on the Nelson Haven brings about an opportunity to catch some flounder.

Maka said one point, there had been several others dwelling there before transience and antisocial behaviour saw them moved on.

‘‘They were just drinking and left bottles lying around everywhere – you got sick of cleaning up their mess.

‘‘Some were in and out of jail – I’m not one of those guys,’’ he said.

Maka works as a labourer when he can, but said he struggled to make enough to afford accommodation.

He had half a day booked in for tomorrow, after which he would head into town to charge his phone and do some shopping.

‘‘That’s the problem for a lot of people – no work – I would do more if I could.’’
