Charges laid after Motueka stabbing
A 22-year-old woman has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after a man suffered serious stab wounds at a Motueka property.
The woman, who has interim name suppression, appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday and was remanded in custody by consent for two weeks.
Judge Arthur Tompkins ordered mental health reports to consider both fitness to stand trial and possible insanity.
A Motueka man in his 40s underwent surgery for multiple stab wounds following the incident early on Wednesday and was in a serious but stable condition in Nelson Hospital.
Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston said police inquiries into the incident at a property in High St, Motueka, were ongoing.
Police were keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything related to the incident which happened shortly before 2am.
Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney said in an earlier statement that police were called by ambulance staff to the property where a Motueka man in his 40s had serious injuries.
Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter pilot Barry McAuliffe said they transported a 45-year-old man to hospital following the incident.
A neighbour to the High St property, Tracy, said they were woken in the early hours by the sound of the helicopter landing in a nearby carpark.
‘‘There was just a lot of police action out the front, police vehicles, police and police dogs.’’
She said the occupants of the house were ‘‘fairly new’’ to the street, but the house was a ‘‘nice quiet house’’ and she’d not seen police called there before.
It had been a ‘‘bit shocking’’ and confusing to wake up to see so much action at the nearby property.
