Warriors aim to avoid hype

- DAVID LONG

The Warriors players are on watch not to get carried away with their stunning start to the season,

For the first time in the club’s history, they are unbeaten after four games of a new NRL season and will look to extend that streak to five when they take on the Cowboys on Saturday night.

Rarely has there been this much euphoria about the Warriors, but with the way they’ve played, they deserve their moment in the sun.

However, Warriors coach Stephen Kearney said it’s important that the players don’t get carried away.

He is having the same process-driven attitude he had when the team went through their nine-game losing streak at the end of last season and expects the players to be the same.

‘‘We keep it pretty simple here, in terms of how we go about our preparation,’’ Kearney said. ‘‘We’ve given them a few tips of being mindful of that.

‘‘Any sense of them not doing their job will certainly get brought up, but the guys are enjoying their footy and enjoying preparing and how they go about things. I don’t think that needs to change.’’

Warriors hooker Issac Luke says the players have allowed themselves to celebrate each win, but know when it comes down to preparing for the next game, those emotions have to evaporate.

‘‘That’s the big thing we’ve had the last few weeks, being able to bring ourselves back to neutral after our games,’’ Luke said.

While it’s still early in the season, it’s clear the Warriors are a different team, not just with results, but commitment and attitude on the field.

Kearney feels several factors have led to this. ‘‘There have been some personnel changes in the group,’’ he said. ‘‘There have been some guys who’ve come from successful football teams and they’ve helped.

Alex [Corvo, fitness trainer] and his team of people have helped, we’ve made a couple of minor adjustments to our game style, which I’ve go no doubt would have helped.

‘‘The guys that have been here for a number of years, they’re hungry to change the mindset too.

‘‘Without them getting on board, then the bus isn’t going to roll forward. So I’ve got to take my hat off to them.’’

‘‘So it’s not one thing, it’s a number of things, but we’ve got a lot of improvement in us and that’s what we work towards every day.’’

The Warriors will welcome back their most experienced player, Simon Mannering, for the Cowboys game.
