Green always believed in Kearney’s Warriors

- Marvin France

Blake Green was always confident he could help turn the Warriors around but the veteran playmaker knows they will ultimately be judged on what happens over the next two months.

Green has quickly developed into one of the Warriors’ most important players since arriving from Manly in the off-season.

The 31-year-old’s organisational skills have brought the best out of the rest of the spine, allowing Shaun Johnson, in particular, to focus on capitalising on scoring opportunities. And the results have been clear to see as the Auckland club enters the final 10 games of the season in fourth place.

It’s a situation even the most one-eyed Warriors fan would have have struggled to believe at the start of the year.

But Green said he always had faith in Stephen Kearney’s vision.

‘‘I wouldn’t have made the move over if I didn’t have belief in the squad and coaching staff,’’ Green told Stuff.

‘‘The roster that the club’s had in the last few years is super talented and just a little bit of belief, a little bit of focus and confidence

goes a long way.

‘‘We’ve got a game style that everyone believes in and suits us and it’s worked so far this year.

‘‘I’m really proud of how we’ve gone so far but there’s plenty of footy left in us and we’ve just to

got keep getting better.’’

With a daunting run of games in the coming weeks, including back-to-back trips to Penrith and Brisbane before a home clash against the Storm, the need for continual improvement could not be emphasised enough.

It starts tonight against Cronulla as the Warriors attempt to snap a two-game losing streak at Mt Smart.

The seventh-placed Sharks, boosted by the midweek signing of prop Aaron Woods, provide a serious challenge for Kearney’s side.

Nothing ever comes easy against the Sharks, who thrive in the arm wrestle. The Shane Flanagan-coached team has had the wood over the Warriors of late, winning eight of the last 10 meetings, and will be targeting this game to stay in touch with the top four.
