Waratahs set to re-sign Gibson

- Tom Decent

Daryl Gibson’s chances of remaining at NSW next year look to be increasing, with Waratahs and NSW Rugby Union chairman Roger Davis saying he was confident an agreement would be reached given there were ‘‘no major stumbling blocks in sight’’.

Like all coaches, results will determine whether Gibson is resigned by the Waratahs for next season.

After doing his time as an assistant to Michael Cheika, Gibson is in his third year as head coach and on the cusp of making the Super Rugby finals for the first time.

Victory against the Sunwolves today will all but guarantee the Waratahs a spot in the Super Rugby playoffs for the first time since 2015 and there is every chance this will be the marker of success Gibson needs to guarantee his job.

Davis, who is overseas at the moment, hinted Gibson was in a favourable position to stay with the club.

‘‘We are both very comfortable with the way discussions have been proceeding,’’ Davis said. ‘‘We are confident in reaching a mutually acceptable and timely outcome with no major stumbling blocks in sight.’’

The ‘‘no stumbling blocks in sight’’ could be interpreted that even if the Waratahs don’t play their best in their last two matches, or even in the finals, Gibson would be safe from the chopping block.

‘‘Discussions are ongoing,’’ Gibson said.

‘‘The big thing from the board is performances are critical. The team and the results do the talking.

‘‘I enjoy my team, I enjoy my job. I really enjoy coaching this team. I think the squad is in an excellent space, not only this season but for next year as well.’’

Gibson endured a horror season in 2017 where the Waratahs won just four games from 15 attempts. Despite calls for him to be sacked after losses to the Southern Kings, Jaguares and Western Force, the NSWRU board stood behind their man.

The fact Gibson had a season to go on his three-year deal was also a factor but on evidence this year, it would be no surprise to see the former All Blacks midfielder remain with the club.
