Williams injured in training

Georgia Williams knew something wasn’t right.

The doctor said it was just bruising and two separate x-rays indicated nothing was broken.

But the pain she experienced after crashing just 10 days out from the Giro Rosa, her most important race of the Women’s World Tour calendar, suggested otherwise.

‘‘I was very hopeful to race the Giro but after a week and a couple of easy rides I was still in a lot of pain.

‘‘So I went to the doctor and asked for a CT scan,’’ the Commonwealth Games silver medallist said.

The CT scan revealed that Williams, New Zealand’s leading female road cyclist, had broken three bones. She had fractured her hip, pubis and sacrum.

‘‘So that was my Giro out the window unfortunately,’’ she said.

Williams, who has achieved a series of career-best results in a breakout 2018, was out training on her time trial bike when the crash occurred.

She said she took a ‘‘dodgy corner’’ a little too fast. There was dust and gravel on the road and her wheel slid out from underneath her.

‘‘My first thought was how hurt am I, am I going to be ok to race the Giro in 10 days?’’ Williams said.

She will spend the next five-six weeks on crutches. After three weeks she will receive another scan and then, all going to plan, Williams will be allowed to return to training.
