How they rated

- AARON GOILE

Damian McKenzie 6: Spent plenty of time at first receiver and also skipped about but couldn’t bust the green wall. A few patchy moments under the high ball. Ben Smith 7: Some good work in the air, smart kickahead option early on, then one good run later.

Jack Goodhue 7: Didn’t miss one of his 19 tackles – the most of his side and the equal of Irish lock Ryan. Sigh of relief when bumbled ball on tryline as Ireland didn’t punish.

Ryan Crotty 7: Combination with Goodhue looks assured, as you’d expect. Very solid without the ball, making 18 tackles without a miss. Some good direct carries on attack.

Rieko Ioane 7: Didn’t see much ball for a while but was the team’s biggest metre-eater, with 69. Excellent highball take while being taken in the air by Kearney. Beauden Barrett 6: Couldn’t unlock the Irish defence to lead his team to a try, despite his dancing efforts from fullback later. Dropped ball on attack, passed when holding would have been better. Missed four of eight tackle attempts. Kicked two from two off the tee. Aaron Smith 6: Record-breaking 82nd test for an All Blacks halfback but quiet day at the office – just did what he had to, no runs. Fine tackle on Kearney.

Kieran Read 7: Looked in trouble with a shoulder/arm injury five minutes before halftime but stayed in the fight. Strong carries and inspirational up-quick defence, making 14 tackles without a miss. Unfortunate crucial moment when charging down Stockdale kick early in second stanza but knocking on in regathering as a try begged.

Ardie Savea 7: Couple of fine steals over the ball but why oh why the kick ahead after one of them to concede a drop-out? Some decent carries and, like his skipper, had 14 tackles without a miss.

Liam Squire 5: Lasted just half an hour due to a leg injury. Solid around the place with no real chances. Sam Whitelock 7: Had a couple of good runs, though was guilty of conceding three first-half penalties. Brilliant couple of lineout steals in second spell and some heavy defensive work.

Brodie Retallick 6: Looked groggy early in the piece but soldiered on, though was unable to stamp his usual high-standards. Stole one lineout late in the piece, but dropped a couple of balls – including the final play. Owen Franks 7: Had to wait 20 minutes for game’s first scrum, then had to work hard to help it improve from shaky moments. Made a whopping 14 first-half tackles. Codie Taylor 6: Quiet (only required for two lineout throws) but dependable before being part of three-way front row substitution early in second half.

Karl Tu’inukuafe 5: Got popped up at a couple of scrums. Didn’t touch of the ball. Missed two of 10 tackle attempts.

Reserves:

Dane Coles 6: (48th min for Taylor) Mixed bag of lineout throwing, with lovely long one for Ioane to latch onto, then bad one short of Whitelock which got turned over.

Ofa Tuungafasi 6: (48th min for Tu’inukuafe) A few carries and made eight tackles without a miss.

Nepo Laulala 6: (48th min for Franks) Not much scrummaging to do but tackled mostly well.

Scott Barrett 7: (32nd min for Squire) On again at blindside, this time for a longer stint. Swooped on loose ball at start of second half and went on to produce a heap of good heavy carries and stoic defence.

Matt Todd N/R: (74th min for Savea)

TJ Perenara 6: (58th min for A Smith) Little grubber straight away off the scrum didn’t pan out, then scampered a bit without being able to unlock the green wall.

Richie Mo’unga 6: (57th min for McKenzie) Took ball flat to the line but couldn’t find any chinks.

Anton Lienert-Brown 7: (62nd min for Crotty) Good impact in carrying strongly on several occasions.
