Anything goes in birthday bash
The Nelson Musical Theatre is celebrating 60 years of performances with a show featuring classic show tunes from its past, present and future.
The Best of Nelson Musical Theatre showcases musical songs from about 20 shows; seen and yet to be seen on the theatre’s stage, including Grease, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, Mamma Mia, Spamalot, Rent, Anything Goes and Cabaret.
With tickets almost sold out, Nelson Musical Theatre communications and marketing manager Francesca Beckett said people needed to get in fast for the cabaret seating style show.
A mixture of solos, duets, and group songs will be sung by 20 performers from the popular musicals – and all without costumes.
She said it would be a relaxed and fun night.
‘‘We’ll definitely be having a lot of fun on stage, so we hope the audience has as much fun as the actors.’’
As well as having cause for a birthday bash, the ticket sales are fundraising for the next part of the theatre refurbishment, which includes repair work and painting.
Beckett said it was ‘‘no mean feat’’ getting the community theatre up to scratch.
‘‘But we have a huge team of volunteers working hard to help out.’’
For supporters of the theatre who weren’t able to attend, donations could be made through Nelson Musical Theatre Facebook page.
The shows will be at the Nelson Musical Theatre, 95 Atawhai Drive, today (tomorrow is sold out) at 7.30pm. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets $20 available from www.iticket.co.nz.
