Exploded house had gas fire issue
The gas fire in a house that exploded in Christchurch was causing issues just days ago, say relatives of the family involved.
Six people were seriously injured in the explosion in Marble Court, Northwood, about 10.20am yesterday. The blast caused roof tiles and insulation to rain down across the neighbourhood. Nearby houses were evacuated and 20 other houses were damaged.
Belinda Blanchfield said her parents, aunt, uncle and one of their friends were inside the home when the explosion happened.
‘‘It’s our worst nightmare. ‘‘My parents are the absolute kindest people ever. A very, very close family.’’
Her husband, Paddy Blanchfield, said the owners were having issues with their gas fire a couple of days ago and were waiting for someone to repair it. It is unclear if the gas fire had been fixed by the time of the explosion.
Paddy Blanchfield said one of the injured had been flown to Middlemore Hospital.
Others who were also badly burnt were in surgery.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) said the explosion came from the area’s reticulated gas supply and caused multiple injuries.
The fire was extinguished by 12.40pm but fire crews remained at the scene to dampen down hotspots and clean up.
‘‘Five properties have been severely affected by fire and one has been destroyed. A further 17 properties have been impacted by debris,’’ Fenz said.
A St John spokesman said six people were in serious to critical condition and were taken to Christchurch Hospital.
