hoops in the paint from standout power forward Isaac Fotu, was proof positive they could be more than just gallant losers, as they’d assuredly been against world top12 sides Brazil and Greece in pool play. With the tournament’s leading scorer Corey Webster well contained to just a dozen points and five assists, Henare got six players in double figures (led by Fotu and Rob Loe’s 17 apiece) and two others on nine.

Turkey – ranked No 19 on the planet – had gone closest to tipping the mighty USA at this event in a one-point overtime loss and got a game-high 32 points from NBA star Cedi Osman in an offensive explosion. This was a quality win eked out in ultra-tight circumstances.

‘‘We had everyone step up and play their roles well. That has been a strength of our group. Corey and Ike [Fotu] have had great tournaments but we needed everyone today and I am really happy for them all,’’ Henare said.

The Tall Blacks’ next assignment will be in one of next year’s four cut-throat Olympic qualifying tournaments where six teams will line up at each event chasing a single spot in Tokyo.
