Fashion will be fizzing at festival

- Samantha Gee

A new festival being held in a Nelson laneway will celebrate vintage clothing and kombucha while encouraging sustainable consumption.

Vinkomilo was named by organiser Cam Sneddon, who said it was a combination of the words vintage, kombucha and kilo.

It will be the first ‘‘vintage kilo’’ event in Nelson, where people pay for clothes by weight instead of per item. Sneddon came across the concept, which is popular in Europe, while living in Germany. ‘‘I thought it was something that New Zealand would absolutely love.’’

Sneddon works for Kombucha Bros, whose brewery is based in Nelson. He said the festival felt like a good opportunity to combine vintage clothing and kombucha and create a different experience.

He said there was an increasing focus on ‘‘healthy consumption’’ and sustainable practices like upcycling and recycling.

‘‘It’s giving the consumer something different to what they are used to, instead of fast fashion controlling the price and pushing how much things are valued at.

‘‘If you’ve managed to find a pair of Levi’s jeans, then they will be priced the same as any other brand.

‘‘We thought Nelson was a brilliant place to do it. The whole sustainable lifestyle and buzz really resonates with a lot of people,’’ Sneddon said.

The clothing racks and kombucha bar will be joined by a DJ and food trucks at the event in the laneway outside the Kombucha Bros brewery in Achilles Ave.

Lenny Wills, who recently opened recycled clothing store Godzilla on Bridge St, will be supplying the clothing for the event.

He said wholesale clothing purchasers had always been able to buy large quantities of clothing at a per kilogram price, and the festival would make this possible for individual consumers as well.

There was a huge amount of second-hand clothing sitting in warehouses around the world, with lots of clothing also ending up in landfill, Wills said.

There will be a mix of vintage clothing at the event, including items from the 1970s and ’80s, as well as modern labels. The price will be around $40 per kg.

Vinkomilo – Vintage Clothing and Kombucha Festival will be on Saturday, February 8 from midday to 8pm in the laneway outside Kombucha Bros, 70 Achilles Ave, Nelson. Tickets start from $7, from vinkomilo.co.nz.
