Market van move

What a ridiculous way to clear a vehicle from the site of the Nelson Saturday Market (Nelson Mail, February 8). The Nelson City Council should be looking for a new contractor.

Trump

Bryan Forrest and Steve Upstill (Letters, February 10) really should try to acquaint themselves with actuality before contesting my views. Their absolute failure to address what I’d written – let alone refute it – demonstrates clearly that objectivity isn’t a virtue among dyed-in-the-wool lefties. Both could seek wider sources of information but, in general, intransigent lefties accept nothing which weakens their outlook. Solely seeking to disparage President Trump, both chose to ignore my letter’s central points.

1. That Biden, Obama’s vicepresident, held up a billion-dollar United States aid package to Ukraine so as to kill Ukraine’s internal investigation into questionable activities by its oil company, Burisma, of whom Biden’s son, Hunter, was a director. Trump’s lawyer holds the proof of a US$14.6 million money-laundering scheme.

2. The serious damage our leftist media’s constant anti-US stance is doing to this country.

Messrs Forrest and Upstill addressed neither of those points. Their sole objective was to rubbish Trump by denouncing ‘‘failings’’ already determined, by media far more responsible than that to which they subscribe, as fake.

Modellers Pond

The plan is simple. Open the gates and empty the Ta¯ hunanui Modellers Pond every perigean spring tide – that’s six to eight times a year. Leave the gate open for the returning perigean spring high tide to fill her up again. Shut the gate and voila! Repeat at the next spring tide. Sea water doesn’t stagnate like fresh water. Problem solved for free, everyone happy.

What? That’s how it was designed in the first place? Well, why the expensive rotting mess we have now? Of course! The Nelson City Council is using the pond as a stormwater holding tank.

Can the NCC not schedule a purpose-capacity shoreside stormwater tank on the edge of the estuary in next year’s infrastructure budget? NCC wins. Modellers and their fans win. Maintenance bill goes out with the tide – win.
