City ready to hit the market – and the dance floor
The end to restrictions around mass gatherings means Nelsonians will be able to shop at the Nelson Market and hit the dance floors this weekend.
The Nelson Market, which sat out levels 2 and 3 due to the difficulty of maintaining safety, will open on Saturday for the first time since March.
Monty’s Sunday Market, held in the same central Nelson spot in Montgomery Square, will also reopen.
Nelson National MP Nick Smith said he hoped Nelsonians would turn out to support the small businesses that sold their wares at the market.
‘‘It has been a tough time; there are few visitors about and [the stallholders] need local support to recover and rebuild.’’
Bars were also looking forward to welcoming more relaxed crowds, with some advertising post-lockdown dance parties.
Playhouse owner and manager Nic Roland said level one means people will finally be able to order drinks at the bar, and move more freely.
During levels 2 and 3, when dancing was not allowed, Roland arranged comedians and unplugged shows, so people would stay in their seats. But with level one, revellers will be able to hit the dance floor. ‘‘The chains are off, we’re ready to roll.’’
Bookings for upcoming gigs were steady, he said.
‘‘People are really wanting to come out and do something new.’’
Janelle Clark, the co-owner and operator of the Turf Hotel, said the Stoke pub would welcome level 1 with bands and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights.
The pub’s clientele had been loyal, turning up as soon as restrictions allowed, she said.
‘‘It’s been good to have the doors open again.’’
Business was already back up to pre-Covid levels. However, a return to dancing and games of pool were very welcome, she said.
‘‘People are ready for a couple of doozy nights on the dance floor, mingling with friends.’’
