NMIT names experienced interim head
The acting chief executive of Northland Polytechnic, Wayne Jackson, has been named interim head of Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT).
Jackson will become NMIT’s acting chief executive on August 31, taking the reins from Liam Sloan, who leaves for a position at Federation University in Melbourne on August 28.
Recruitment agency
Jackson Stone &
Partners would manage recruitment for the permanent role.
Jackson was chief executive officer of professional services network, Grant Thornton
NZ, and a partner with Ernst and Young NZ for 19 years, as well as a director of its business advisory practice.
NMIT board chair Daryl Wehner said Jackson had proven himself to be a ‘‘good leader’’ in the tertiary education sector, which had been hit hard by coronavirus.
‘‘The challenges Wayne will face for our region, will be . . . the financial challenge that every institution in New Zealand is facing as a result of the pandemic.’’
Getting the institute ‘‘back onto a strong financial footing’’, and examining its role in responding to rising unemployment in the region, would be Jackson’s main focus areas, Wehner said.
NMIT forecast losses of $1.3 million to $1.5m if international students could not return this year.
The Government has ruled out a return of foreign students for the start of next semester this month and in August.
