AFMA Fleet Forum
The AFMA (Australasian
Fleet Managers Association) Forum held in October had two interesting speakers.
Caroline Perry from BRAKE spoke on fleet safety and how fleets should be looking to go beyond mere compliance. New Zealand has a poor international road safety record with 8.5 deaths per 100,000 people vs Sweden and UK at 2.7 per annum.
The social cost of road accidents is put at $3.9 million a year. Businesses should look to develop a business case for fleet safety as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy.
Caroline recommended the website www. fleetsafetybenchmarking. net as a great resource for companies who want to improve their fleet’s safety.
Steve Bowden from event sponsor Teletrac Navman, introduced the next speaker,
Jason Stapp from the New
Zealand Racing Board.
Teletrac Navman currently track 135,000 assets in Australia and New Zealand and users report a 20 percent reduction in road incidents after implementation.
Jason Stapp spoke of the NZRB’S experience implementing Teletrac Navman tracking. Presently the board has 1100 staff and a fleet of 125 vehicles.
Since implementing the tracking system, the Bboard has seen reduced overspeed incidents (defined as over 108 km/h) by over 90 percent, and almost eradicated over 120 km/h incidents.
Vehicle damage costs have fallen by 70 percent and infringements by 94 percent whilst average fuel consumption has fallen by 50 percent - some of this is due to changes in the vehicles making up the fleet but most is due to speed reduction and better monitoring of fuel use measured against distance.
