White was an internatio­nal master, so his club amateur opponent decided to go for broke with an all-out attack on the white king. It succeeded beyond his best dreams as the IM’s defence proved shaky and White underestim­ated the danger to his h2 pawn. In the puzzle diagram, Black (to move) could strengthen his attack simply by Rg8, but Haldane looked closer and found a much, much better idea. How did Black win in style?

1 ... Nf5! 2 Bxh8 Qxh2+! 3 Nxh2 Bxh2+ 4 Kh1 Ng3 mate.
