White was an in­ter­na­tional mas­ter, so his club am­a­teur op­po­nent de­cided to go for broke with an all-out at­tack on the white king. It suc­ceeded be­yond his best dreams as the IM’s de­fence proved shaky and White un­der­es­ti­mated the dan­ger to his h2 pawn. In the puz­zle di­a­gram, Black (to move) could strengthen his at­tack sim­ply by Rg8, but Hal­dane looked closer and found a much, much bet­ter idea. How did Black win in style?
