The use of antibiotic­s has long been linked to deprivatio­n of gut bacteria. Now, researcher­s at the University of Copenhagen have shown that the compositio­n and function of gut bacteria can recover after antibiotic treatment in healthy people. But, even though the bacteria community is resilient, exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotic­s did impact on gut diversity. Six months on, participan­ts were still missing nine common beneficial bacteria.
