The golfer has bettered his father David Smail’s amateur golfing record by winning the 2018 New Zealand Amateur Golf Championship.

You’ve qualified for the 2019 NZ Open, at Millbrook and The Hills, near Queenstown, with your win. Is this the first time you’ll play in the same field as your dad at a competitive event? I’ve played in several Charles Tour events that Dad also played in. But this one will be special because it’s the 100th anniversary of the NZ Open and Dad has won it before, in 2001.

What’s a favourite childhood food memory? I loved the food in Japan, where we travelled with Dad on the golf tour when I was young. Food such as sashimi and Japanese bread and barbecues. Growing up with a variety of food in Hamilton and Narita, Japan, I enjoy all types of cuisine, such as Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Italian and homecooked food, such as Mum’s lamb roast and Dad’s barbecues.

Do you avoid any foods before competitive golf? I avoid all fast foods before and while competing.

What type of foods do you eat during a game? I have protein bars, scroggin, bananas, sometimes a sandwich and lots of water.

Have you faced any dietary challenges while competing overseas? I struggled to find food in Malaysia when I played there, especially for breakfast. The breakfast staple was fish curry; I found that difficult and craved cereal and fruit.

How would you describe your diet and lifestyle? It’s focused around my golf and training. I try to maintain a balance, so I still enjoy what I’m doing.

What is your typical breakfast? Today, I had a protein shake that included mixed berries, greek yogurt, protein powder and low-fat milk. I also had two bananas.

What about lunch? It was sushi.

What is a typical evening meal at home for you? Mum usually cooks, but, as it’s summer, we’re having barbecues quite often and Dad cooks the meat. Usually, we have steak, pork, lamb or chicken with salads and veges.

Will your mum, Sheree, also a former professional golfer, be carrying your bag at the NZ Open? I hope so – that’s the plan!

The 100th New Zealand Open is at Millbrook Resort and The Hills, February 28-March 3, 2019.
