Newborn babies are able to pick out individual words in a stream of sounds, European scientists have found. Their study, published in Developmental Science, used a painless technique called Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to measure brain activity in three-day-olds. They found their brains responded differently to four meaningless words they had previously heard in a stream of sounds – highlighting just how much information they are able to absorb.
