BARDEN’S CHESS PROBLEMS
Artur Yusupov v Adarsh Jayakumar, Arlington, 2015
Thirty years ago, Yusupov was a world championship semi-finalist and one of the top grandmasters in the Soviet Union. In the lawless conditions of Russia’s 1990s, he was shot in the stomach by an intruder in his Moscow flat and was lucky to survive. He emigrated to Germany, made a new career as a coach and writer, and still keeps his hand in at opens such as this one in Virginia, United States. As White (to play), Yusupov has built a classic attacking formation. How did he clinch victory?
1 Nc6! Bxc6 2 Qxh7+! Kxh7 3 Rh3+ and Rh8 mate.
