With thousands of labels on the shelves, it’s easy to find a good wine. The greatest pleasure in wine buying, however, involves discoverin­g labels, like these, that offer irresistib­le value for money.

Dashwood by Vavasour Marlboroug­h Riesling 2019 ★★★★

Attractive­ly scented, this lightbodie­d wine has vibrant, citrusy, slightly appley flavours, gentle sweetness, appetising acidity and very good delicacy, depth and harmony. Already enjoyable. (11% alc/vol) $16

Mount Brown Estates Grand Reserve North Canterbury Pinot Gris 2018 ★★★★ 1/2

This richly scented wine was fermented and aged in seasoned oak barrels. Vibrantly fruity, it has substantia­l body with concentrat­ed pear and peach flavours, gentle acidity and an off-dry finish. (14.5% alc/vol) $20

Mount Riley Marlboroug­h Gewürztram­iner 2019 ★★★★

Perfumed and full-bodied, this wine was mostly handled in tanks, but 10% was barrel fermented. Invitingly perfumed, it has peach, lychee and spice flavours, showing a touch of complexity, slight sweetness and excellent vibrancy, balance and depth.

Old Coach Road Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2019 ★★★ 1/2

This is Seifried Estate’s lowest-tier sauvignon. It has fresh, punchy, herbaceous and tropical-fruit aromas and flavours with a basically dry, tangy finish. A top vintage that is priced sharply. (13% alc/vol) $14

Taylors Promised Land South Australia Shiraz 2017 ★★★ 1/2

“Crafted for immediate enjoyment”, this full-coloured red slips down very easily. It is fragrant and softly mouthfilli­ng with slightly earthy notes and loads of ripe, plummy, spicy flavour. (14% alc/vol) $14

The Crater Rim Waipara Valley Pinot Noir 2016 ★★★★ 1/2

Estate-grown in North Canterbury, this youthful red was matured in French oak barrels. It is bright ruby in colour and has an attractive, fragrant, savoury bouquet. Mouthfilli­ng, it has fresh, ripe-cherry, plum and spice flavours, showing good complexity, and a very harmonious finish. (14% alc/vol) $19-$28

Thornbury Marlboroug­h Sauvignon Blanc 2019 ★★★★

Fresh and full-bodied, this sweetfruit­ed wine has ripe passionfru­it-like flavours to the fore, a herbaceous undercurre­nt and a dry, crisp, lingering finish. (13% alc/vol) $16

Wither Hills Marlboroug­h Pinot Gris 2019 ★★★★

Fragrant and full-bodied, this is an Alsace-style pinot gris with generous pear and spice flavours, a sliver of sweetness and finely balanced acidity. It’s a youthful wine that is delicious now. (13.5% alc/vol) $18
