Theory v practice: avoid safety over-load

-

LOGGING CONTRACTORS AND THEIR crews have a lot to digest in their normal everyday work activities, but the new layer of responsibilities around health and safety has taken this to a higher level since last year’s introduction of the HSW Act 2015.

Just think about these: PCBU, worker, officer, advisor, manage risk, hazards, critical risks, exposure, consequence, risk matrix, residual risk, hierarchy of controls – eliminate, minimise (substitution, isolation, engineering, administrative, PPE), reckless behavior and so on.

It can be really easy to overload and/or confuse people with changes to the legislation and the implications of these.

And while it is important for those on the ground to understand what this all means, it’s more important to remember that, on a daily basis, it is understanding what can hurt you or your workmates, and how you go about preventing this harm from happening that really counts.

So, how is this any different from the previous legislation?

Top Spot’s view is the bottom line hasn’t changed.

That is, we all need to work together to manage risk. How we do that really has to work for each crew. And the guys need to understand the plan and ensure it happens, all day, every day.

Plan, document, review but most importantly, make sure we get the doing right.

Part of what we are looking for in the programme is this combination of doing and understanding what the new legislation requires.

The understanding also includes how the crew goes about ensuring there are tools in place to transfer knowledge to workers.

Better knowledge = better application to the worksite = better safety on the job.

We have also been involved with a few discussions recently where recognition and culture have come to the fore as areas where our industry could improve.

Nice to see people finally acknowledging where we have been coming from with Top Spot for the last 12 years! It would be good if the whole industry recognised this fact

Sponsors – They don’t have to do this but they choose to!

Awesome companies, awesome people and awesome support!

They back you and your workmates to succeed as professionals, so why wouldn’t you support them.

They believe in what we do and what you do.

So, a big ongoing thank you to our Strategic Partners – STIHL and NZ Logger and sponsor SWAZI.

The best way to keep our industry working is to get out and support those businesses that support New Zealand.
