For the businesses we spoke to and for global companies, the single most important idea that they believed contributed to transformational success was for the business to take the time to ensure that everyone truly understands why the business needs to transform. Unless a common narrative is established, the transformation becomes a series of change projects and fails to fulfil its potential to transform the business. For New Zealand Post, significant time and effort was invested in this process and when painful decisions had to be made people understood why. The term ‘wallowing in our reality’ comes from Nadella who pressed the business to come to terms with the vulnerability that is the reality for even a successful giant like Microsoft and to re-define its core before any steps were taken to transform.
