Choosing a Destination

Forget everything else and focus solely on each other – and an incredible location – on a trip that’s tailor- made for your personal brand of bliss.

THE STYLE

Now’s your chance to plan and book the romantic escape of your dreams as Mr and Mrs. Destinations such as the Pacific Islands, Australia, Bali and Thailand have long held favour with Kiwi honeymooners, but the world truly is your oyster when it comes to picking where you’d like to holiday after “I do”.

Consider ticking off a country that’s long been on your must- see list, or if you’re a couple with diverse interests, find a destination that offers the best of both worlds. Alternatively you may like to revisit somewhere that holds special significance for you, such as the place where you met or where they popped the question. And think about the type of climate you like: are you sun worshippers or snow bunnies?

Once you’re on the same page, discuss your budget. If you’re money- conscious and flexible with your destination, chat to a travel agent and keep an eye out for deals.

THE TIMING

When to honeymoon is just as important as where you go. Research the annual weather patterns at your chosen destination and aim to travel at a time of year when you’re likely to strike the weather you want. Unless mingling with the masses is your idea of a relaxing holiday, you might also want to plan your itinerary around school holiday periods or dates that coincide with major events.

Also consider the length of your honeymoon relative to your budget and how long you can take leave from other commitments such as work.

If time allows, take a couple of extra annual leave days after your honeymoon. This will let you ease back into your everyday routine and recover from jet lag if your trip will see you cross time zones.

THE BOOKINGS

There are two main ways you can book your trip: DIY or via a dedicated travel agent. Surfing the web is a great way to research foreign countries, but don’t rush into hitting ‘ buy now’. Making bookings via the internet may seem convenient, but sometimes there are restrictions or hidden loopholes that can limit other areas of your honeymoon planning.

Booking through a travel agent or broker can be a safer and less stressful option for a honeymoon. Not only will their expertise give you peace of mind, but they’ll also be able to tailor a package to suit your individual needs, incorporating everything from flights and transfers to car rental, accommodation, meals and activities.

An agent will also keep you on track with the finer details such as reminding you to check that your passport is up to date or passing your flight information on to your hotel in case of delays.
