The perfect union of culture, spirituality and fun.

Iproposed to Laura on a balmy evening in Hong Kong City, around the corner from where Laura used to read poetry at the local open mic, one of our favourite spots.

Almost two years later we wed at Auckland’s Kauri Bay Boomrock. We loved the classy and modern feel of the venue; it had a cosy fireplace, comfortable lounges and looked out across the moana. It was also a lovely coincidence that our summer wedding coincided with the weekend of the Pride Parade. During our outdoor ceremony Laura wore a korowai and I wore a

pah bing (Laotian sash) – we wanted a wedding that embodied both our cultures, Maoriand Laotian, and respected the bicultural nature of Aotearoa. We were honoured to have Dame Naida Glavish as our celebrant; she performed the ceremony in Te Reo Maoriand English. We also had a Laotian su kwan, a ceremony performed to bring balance and harmony to the couple and their guests.

Unknowingly, we both chose gowns that complemented each

other’s. I found my rose-hued gown with handstitched gems at BHLDN in Los Angeles, and accessorised with my mum’s Laotian earrings and gold bracelet. Laura’s gown was designed by Martin Thornburg for Mon Cheri – a gorgeous strapless, floral dress with a sweeping cathedral train and accessorised with Zoe & Morgan earrings.

Twig & Twine created our floral centrepieces in blush and neutral blooms with sprigs of greenery, arranged in clear glass vases in varying heights to create a natural, unpolished look.

Following our delicous three- course dinner, dessert was a divine two-tier semi-naked cake by Bluebells Cakery in carrot and chocolate. We also served a late-night snack of parmesan fries with aioli, a big hit!

The highlight of the day was gathering up our gowns and running up to catch the sky as it changed from tangerine to blush as the sun sank into the slopes of the Clevedon Scenic Reserve. It was a wonderful chance to relax, breathe and take it all in.
