APPLY, RINSE AND SHINE! NATURAL TREATS FOR STRESSED, DRY TRESSES

-

The nicest thing you can do for your hair after summer is throw some hot oil on it. The best oils to use are olive, almond or avocado. Heat some oil and saturate your hair in it. Cover with cling film and hop in the bath.

Wash out with a good shampoo after half an hour or longer if you can. I sometimes do this overnight (without the cling film), but make sure to cover your pillow with an old towel.

HAIR RINSES

I love a good rinse and the art of this is in the application. Pour the rinse into a large mug, then lean over a basin with the plug in. Up-end the mug on the back of your head so that the rinse pours slowly through your scalp and hair.

Collect up the rinse from the basin and pour it over your head again. Wrap a towel around your head and leave it on for 10 minutes or so before drying your hair. ROSEMARY HAIR RINSE

Cut several spikes off your rosemary bush (or find one locally that you can use), making sure to cut from the base of the spike so you don’t harm the plant.

Fill a big jar (about 1L capacity) with the spikes – chop to size if necessary – and fill two-thirds of the jar with boiling water. Leave for 24 hours with the lid on, then top up with cider vinegar.

Use one cup at a time and enjoy soft, manageable hair. This rinse will last for about a week, but storing it in the fridge will help it last longer.

LAVENDER RINSE Follow the instructions for rosemary but substitute lavender spikes.

DANDRUFF SOOTHER

If you have a problem with dandruff or an itchy scalp, replace the water in the rinse recipe with vinegar, preferably cider vinegar. Heat gently on the stove in a pot before pouring it over the herbs. Proceed as directed for the rinse.
