Nourish YOUR HAIR
IF YOUR HAIR IS DRY AND YOUR SCALP FEELS ITCHY, THINK ABOUT GOING SULPHATE-FREE
Once upon a time, sulphate-free shampoos were relatively unheard of and difficult to find, but nowadays they’re becoming a lot more mainstream with most hair brands offering sulphate-free options.
“The demand for sulphatefree shampoos is becoming greater as a direct result of a growing number of clients who are seeking out more gentle formulation options,” explains Diane Shaskey, National Education Manager for Matrix.
But are they any better for our hair? “The benefits are varied, however many consumers are seeking out these formulations to address skin sensitivity issues and to minimalise the friction that occurs during the lathering process when shampooing,” says Diane. “A sulphate-free product is considered to achieve a gentle cleansing process.”
It’s this gentle nature that also makes them a popular choice for those wanting to preserve their dyed hair. “Different colour services create vastly different needs and sulphate-free shampoos may play a part in helping with colour longevity when prescribed appropriately,” explains Diane.
If you have always used traditional shampoo formulations, the first thing you’ll notice is how different a sulphate-free variety feels in the shower, particularly its lack of bubbles.
“Moving from a sulphatebased shampoo to a sulphatefree product may require a period of adjustment
(about seven days) as the hair manages the transition from one formulation to another,” she says.
Advancements in technology are seeing a more luxurious feel to the formulations.
“A modern sulphate-free shampoo has great lathering and cleansing capabilities, and while the lather may be not the same thick, creamy experience that a sulphate shampoo is, it is a lighter, satisfying lather which makes the product enjoyable to use.”
