BARRY MANNAKEE

-

One man who was said to have captured Diana’s heart was police sergeant Barry Mannakee, who became one of her first personal bodyguards. Popular and discreet, he became a close friend in 1985 and 1986, when her marriage had hit a low point and she was struggling with all the attention she received.

Whether or not she had an affair with him is not known, although he was later named as one of her lovers at her inquest. However, courtiers had Barry removed from his post. Diana was devastated when he died in a motorbike accident in 1987 and for many years she made an annual pilgrimage to the crematorium where his ashes were scattered.
