According to Harvard Medical School researchers, when you do something unfamiliar, it creates fresh connections between brain cells, which can reduce your risk of cognitive decline. In addition, novel experiences have been shown to protect against hearing loss, depression and social isolation.

“We know that people who remain engaged throughout their life are not just physically healthier, they’re also more mentally astute,” tells Clare.

While passive activities, such as watching TV, can be relaxing, she says getting out into the community and taking a class or attending a workshop is far better for stimulating your brain.

“It doesn’t matter what it is – it’s the learning process itself that helps to build new connections between brain cells,” asserts Clare.

You can also challenge your mind by doing puzzles, attending a dance class, taking a cooking class to master an unfamiliar cuisine or learning to meditate. Whatever it is you’re interested in, go for it!
