LONG WAY HOME

- Havins, Nelson, February 22, 1965

My brother had had his fifth birthday party and I was driving all his little guests home. They were in the back seat kicking up a fearful din. I dropped one off and I was trying to get directions to the next boy’s place. He sat in the front seat to point out the way – I turned when he said to. We went up one street and down another. Soon I was a little bewildered. But still he went on pointing and directing until after three miles, we were back where the first boy got off. I pointed out this fact to my guide who, with his pals, began to giggle. I discovered that he lived exactly seven houses from my first stop.
