CAINE-DO SPIRIT

THE LEGENDARY ACTOR IS ON A HEALTH KICK

- Vivienne Archer

Sir Michael’s on a health kick

His 163rd film, GoinginStyle, is about to be released, but Sir Michael Caine (84) is refusing to slow down. However, the legendary actor admits he’s had to shape up.

The star has lost 15kg on a new health kick, spurred on by the desire to see his grandkids – twins aged six and a grandson aged seven – grow up.

“I know my days are numbered and that’s my main worry,” says Michael. “I’ve had to cut back on the drinking and I’m always looking up what’s the best thing against cancer, so I’ll eat this or do this or not do that.”

The GetCarter actor’s biggest fear is developing cancer and he’s cut out all sugar, salt and gluten from his diet – a far cry from his former, more destructive self.

A decade ago, it was common for Michael to polish off a bottle of vodka and several packs of cigarettes a day, but he credits his wife of 43 years Shakira (70) with transforming his life, saying “Without her, I’d have been dead a long time ago.”

Michael – who has two daughters, Dominique and Natasha – is determined to not let his age overcome him. He’s up with the play when it comes to social media, he updates his own Twitter page and loves his iPad, which he uses to send jokes to Sir Roger Moore.

However, the Cockney lad from London doesn’t miss his youth “because I did it. Each decade was great for me... Now I have a happy family life, which is incredibly important to me because I regard the family as the greatest thing on earth. I love my wife. I have three grandchildren. I am overwhelmed with happiness every day.”
