MOTHER love

-

When Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds passed away within two days of each other last year, a shocked world plunged into mourning for mother and daughter.

Now a new documentary, which will play in Wellington and Auckland as part of the Documentary Edge International Film Festival, gives an inside look at their relationship and life together.

From emotional interviews with the pair, to simple days at their home, this is an intimate and moving portrayal.

Directors Fisher Stevens and Alexi Bloom explain that Carrie approached them about making a documentary about Singin’in theRain star

Debbie, who was still working at nightclubs in her eighties.

“She wanted the world to see how incredible her mother was,” explains Fisher. While initially Carrie (60) was shocked at the intimacy of the film, Fisher says the Star Wars actress did enjoy it.

“There were little things that really bugged her, but in the end she fell in love with the film and thought it was a love letter to her and her mother, and that’s the good news

– that she loved it,” he says.

The project started in 2014 and was filmed over 10 months. Little did Fisher and Alexi know that it would be the final film made with the pair.

Alexi says he hasn’t watched the film since they died. He explains, “Things that you found funny before are now heart-breaking. It’s tough to watch to be honest.”
