When it comes to the supernatural world, British actress Cara Theobold isn’t a believer. But the moment she read the script for the new paranormal drama TV movie Harry Price: Ghost Hunter, she was hooked.
“The supernatural has never played a part in my life, although I’m very open-minded and researching for this role has been really great and eye-opening,” admits the former Downton Abbey star.
The film, which is based on the life of real-life ghost hunter Harry Price, sees Cara (27) take on the role of Sarah, an intelligent young woman who works as a maid. Her life is turned upside-down when she meets Harry and is thrust into a world of ghost chasing.
“I loved the script. I thought the character seemed strong, fiery, charismatic and likeable,” remembers Cara. “The fact that it was set in the 1920s was also a big draw. I wanted to play someone on the cusp of the Women’s Rights Movement – it must have been very tough staying strong in a situation when you have everything against you.”
In preparation for the role, Cara, who played kitchen maid Ivy in Downton, spent hours researching what life was like in the ‘20s.
While her time on the show may not have made her believe in the supernatural, it was a rewarding experience and she hopes there will be a follow-up movie.
“We’d all love to return, tell more stories and to revisit these characters,” she tells. “While watching the film, you’ll find yourself caring about the characters and you’ll want to know more about them.”
