Love of THEIR LIVES

- Nicky Pellegrino BOOKS EDITOR

THERE’S NO AGE LIMIT TO FINDING A SOULMATE

Now Let’s Dance is a simple novel filled with charm and whimsy. It’s about late-life love and there’s a moral to the story – it’s never too late to find happiness.

Marguerite Delorme is getting used to life as a widow. Her husband Henri has died and she finds herself disoriented at the prospect of a future without him.Their marriage wasn’t especially happy – in fact, Henri was cold and controlling. But Marguerite had grown used to pleasing him, and the rituals of their life together were strict and unchanging.

Even her hair has been worn in the disciplined chignon Henri preferred. At 78, she’s not sure what to do now she’s free to please herself. All she knows is that she doesn’t want to move into a retirement home, however much her son would like her to.

Marcel Guedj has lost Nora, the love of his life, suddenly and tragically. Devastated by grief, he has cut himself off from the world and is barely coping.

His worried daughter insists he takes a course of thermal therapy at a spa in the Pyrenees.

By chance, that is exactly what Marguerite’s doctor has prescribed for her. (This may sound unlikely but health spas, where you go for seaweed wraps and mud baths, really are prescribed by the more old-fashioned doctors in France.)

Marcel loathes the spa, with its torturous treatments and not even a piece of chocolate to sweeten the day. But then he and Marguerite meet and something sparks between them.

This is the gentlest of love stories, uplifting, hopeful and very poignant. It’s an antidote to all those dark, depressing reads that seem to be around these days and, despite an almost complete absence of drama, it still manages to be a pageturner. I’m recommending Now Let’s Dance to anyone looking for an escapist, but still thoughtful, novel to get lost in. And especially to everyone who aims to live life to the full to the very last.
