LAVENDER SACHET

Don’t you just love lavender sachets, Pixie children? They are so easy to make and I am sure your little girl friends would love a pretty tin of lavender powder covered with organdie. Next time you are in town, hunt around and find an upright tin that is not too big. Paste a piece of white paper over the label so that it will not be seen through the material when you have covered the tin. Measure the tin and cut the cover out exactly three times the size, so you will be able to gather it in. Run a drawing thread round the top and bottom, and draw in to fit the tin. If the tin is not attractive on the top, find some gold paint and varnish it all over. To finish it off and make it look especially attractive, work some little rosebuds at the top of the sachet and tie some very narrow baby ribbon round the top.

SHORT WORD COMPETITION

Today I have been thinking of a very big word for you. I did not want it to be easy, because I know you are all very clever at making short words out of long ones. I have chosen TRANSUBSTANTIATION. Do you know what that means? See how many short words you can make, and send in the solution to the Sunshine Lady.

FOR FUN AND FANCY

Master: Who was Noah’s wife? Pupil: Joan of Arc, sir? Teacher: And where do we find the elephant? Boy (after pause): The – er – elephant is such a large animal that it is – er – seldom lost.

SPECIAL CANDY RECIPES: NUT AND CHERRY FUDGE

Two cups of sugar, half a cup of chopped nuts, one teaspoon of cream of tartar, three quarters of a cup of water, two teaspoonfuls of butter, half a cupful of candied cherries, one teaspoon of vanilla essence. Method: Mix together the nuts and the cherries. Cook the water, sugar, butter, and cream of tartar until a little dropped in cold water forms a soft ball when rolled between the fingers. Leave to cool, and when lukewarm, add the vanilla and beat until thick. Beat in the cherries and the nuts, turn into a prepared tin and mark into bars before the fudge hardens.

SAY THIS QUICKLY

A thatcher of thatchwoods went to thatch a thatchling. Did the thatcher of thatchwood go to thatch a thatchling? If the thatcher of thatchwood went to thatch a thatchling, where’s the thatchling the thatcher of thatching-wood thatched?
