As we age, it becomes more difficult for our bodies to absorb nutrients from food.

It is common for older people to become deficient in iron, vitamin B12 or vitamin D. It’s worth having blood tests to check your levels of important nutrients and if you are lacking in any, to change your diet or consider taking supplements. Also try to spend some time in the sun – around 15 minutes a day – and expose some skin, such as your forearms, to the rays as this can provide all-important vitamin D. Take care not to get burnt, though.

You’re likely to notice a lot of general aches and pains, which is all part of your body ageing. Don’t do anything that could put you at risk of aggravating sore joints or having a fall.

Try gentle exercise, including stretching, to stop your body from seizing up.

Depression can be a problem, especially if grieving for lost loved ones, feeling isolated or frustrated with the limitations that can come with advanced age. Find things in life that give you pleasure and talk to others about how you are feeling.
